ABOUT INCIGHT ACADEMY

Disability awareness is ultimately human awareness.

INCIGHT Academy is the online learning home of INCIGHT, a Portland nonprofit changing how workplaces, schools, and communities view disability. We turned two decades of workshops into a certificate program you can complete from anywhere.
WHERE WE COME FROM

One vision. Three commitments.

INCIGHT, founded over twenty years ago by Scott Hatley and University of Portland friends, believes every person can contribute to their fullest, whatever obstacles they carry. Our vision: move the world by expecting great contributions from people experiencing disabilities.

01Changing hearts and minds

Busting stigma, breaking down barriers and reframing the conversation around disability, starting with a safe place to ask questions.

02Leveraging obstacles

Setbacks are part of every life. What matters is how we respond: build on strengths, adapt, and make a plan to move through what stands in the way.

03Unlocking potential

More potential lives in the disability community than has ever been realized. We raise expectations and hand people the tools to reach their goals.
The INCIGHT card. One question, twenty years of workshops.
WHY AN ACADEMY

From a workshop card to a certificate program

For twenty years, Scott Hatley has ended every INCIGHT workshop the same way: with a card. On one side, the INCIGHT logo. On the other, one question. How are you going to leverage your obstacles?
Workshops reach one room at a time. The CDC reports that one in four adults in the United States lives with a disability, and the leaders who shape their careers work everywhere. INCIGHT Academy exists so that the same conversation can reach any manager, team or campus, at their own pace, with the same voices that built it.
The result is the Disability-Aware Leader Certificate Program: a journey built in four movements, from personal awareness to leadership, from coaching to communication that breaks down barriers.
HOW WE TEACH

Short, real, and built for action

Built from twenty years of full-day INCIGHT workshops, the academy keeps their honesty and their stories, and delivers them in a format that fits your week.

01Ten to fifteen minutes

Every module fits into a working day. Watch, reflect, move on. No lectures, no filler.

02Real stories, not theory

Scott and Eugene teach from their own lives and from thousands of conversations with employers and employees. The frameworks come with the stories that made them.

03One action per module

Each module ends with a challenge to try this week and a reflection in your workbook. Change happens between the modules, not during them.

04A certificate that means something

The certificate exam does not test memory. It validates a mindset and a skill set you have practiced across the whole program.
YOUR GUIDES

The voices behind the academy

Two voices carry the whole program: a co-founder who has lived every idea he teaches, and a board member who has spent his career developing leaders. They close the journey together.

Scott Hatley

Co-founder of INCIGHT

Diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy at four and a half, Scott grew up in an expectations culture: you will participate, you will contribute, you will live fully. He co-founded INCIGHT out of the University of Portland, leads it today with the help of a ventilator, and has asked thousands of people one question: what obstacles are you experiencing right now?

Eugene Wallace

INCIGHT board member

Eugene has spent his career making leaders, guided by one conviction: every person is a masterpiece in the making, and excellent leaders are made, never born. In the academy he takes you from managing tasks to leading people, through engagement, servant leadership, accountability and a culture of recognition, and stands beside Scott to close the program.
THE STANDARD WE TEACH

Not a title. A daily practice.

The certificate is not the finish line. It is a declaration of who you have decided to be for every person you lead. Five commitments define a Disability-Aware Leader.
01

Set high expectations for everyone

When expectations are set, people meet them. Expectations are where unlocking potential begins, for people with disabilities and without.
02

Build profound relationships

Know your people as humans, not just employees. Trust grows from real interest and curiosity.
03

Endeavor for brilliant communication

Clear expectations, regular feedback, a focus on strengths, and the courage to say what needs to be said.
04

Leverage obstacles, yours and others'

Define the obstacle. Find the lever. Adapt. Focus on what people can do and build on it.
05

Change hearts and minds, starting with your own

Challenge your limiting beliefs. Confront your unfair judgments. Be open to being wrong, and make room for others to do the same.

The question we leave you with

Think of the first time someone told you that you couldn't. You still remember the room, the voice, maybe the exact words. Some of us spent years proving that sentence wrong. Some of us are still living inside it. That sentence is an obstacle. So is every one you have handed to someone else. How are you going to leverage your obstacles?
